Dr Xand - Restless Legs Syndrome

Up to 1 in 10 people suffer from Restless Legs Syndrome in the UK, so Dr Xand joined us to talk about the condition and what you can do to ease symptoms

ㅤㅤ

WHAT IS RESTLESS LEGS SYNDROME?

Also known by its short name, RLS it's classed as a neurological disorder. People who have the condition get pain or uncomfortable sensations in the area affected which gives them the intense urge to move that part of the body to relieve them of that feeling. Although its name indicates that it only affects the legs, RLS can affect the arms, head and other parts of the body too. The severity of the condition is different for everyone. Some people experience only mild symptoms or minor annoyance while others find it unbearable, significantly impacting their quality of life. RLS is mostly experienced in the evening or at night when people are trying to sleep.

ㅤㅤ

WHO IS AFFECTED BY THE CONDITION?

Women are twice as likely to develop restless legs syndrome than men. It’s also more common in middle age, although the symptoms can develop at any age, including childhood.

There are two types of RLS:

Primary

This type has no obvious cause. Many people with primary RLS say that they have a family history of the disorder, so that might suggest an inheritance of the disease. Although primary RLS has been linked to genetics, the exact basis of the disorder hasn't been clearly defined, so the cause of this kind of RLS is unknown.

Secondary

Secondary RLS often has a sudden onset and can be caused by a number of things, including the use of certain drugs, for example antihistamines in cold and allergy remedies. RLS can also come about as a result of other medical conditions like MS, or kidney failure. Some studies have shown that restless legs syndrome is common in patients with type 2 diabetes and that refined sugar may lead to an increase in symptoms too. As well as diabetes, there's also some evidence to show that severe restless legs syndrome may be an early feature of Parkinson's disease, so that's definitely something to bear in mind and chat to your GP about if you're concerned.

ㅤㅤ

HOW CAN WE DISTINGUISH RLS FROM BEING FIDGETY?

People with RLS consistently describe symptoms like limbs tingling, burning or itching, they also might experience a "creepy-crawly" feeling or feel like fizzy water is inside the blood vessels in the legs. This can make contact with bedding feel uncomfortable or they may find it difficult to sit for long periods of time. For some people, walking around or rubbing the legs can give temporary relief. RLS is often mistaken for other conditions partly because the symptoms are difficult to describe and also because there is usually nothing abnormal to find during a physical examination.

Xand says:

"It's really important to avoid making light or fun of someone if they're telling you about this condition because it can be serious, and when people shy away from getting help, that's when companies start to take advantage and try and sell you things like shock machines or unnecessary tablets etc."

ㅤㅤ

HOW CAN PEOPLE MANAGE RLS SYMPTOMS?

Restless legs syndrome caused by an underlying health condition can be relieved when that condition is treated, for example, your GP might recommend iron supplements to treat iron deficiency anaemia, which is believed to be one cause of RLS. If it’s associated with pregnancy, it usually disappears on its own within four weeks of the birth.

For the most part, mild restless legs syndrome that isn’t linked to an underlying health condition can often be managed with just a few lifestyle changes, things like avoiding caffeine, tobacco and alcohol in the evenings, not smoking, taking regular daily exercise, but avoiding exercising near bedtime and practising good sleep habits including trying not to nap during the day.

As well as this, there are some simple stretches people can try to relieve the symptoms of RLS.

ㅤㅤ

Dr Xand and Strictly's Neil Jones' Stretches to help with RLS

With the help of Strictly Come Dancing professional dancer, Neil Jones, Dr Xand demonstrated some useful stretches in the studio that people can try when confronted with symptoms of RLS.

You can watch this demonstration back on BBC iPlayer - Morning Live, 8th April 2024.

ㅤㅤ

#1 - CALF STRETCH

  1. Stretch your arms out and place palms flat against the wall
  2. Slightly bend one knee and step back with your other leg
  3. Position the heel of this foot flat to the floor
  4. Hold for 30 seconds
  5. After this, bend the knee of the leg you stepped back with while still keeping the heel and foot flat on the floor for a slightly deeper stretch
  6. Switch legs and repeat

ㅤㅤ

#2 - THIGH STRETCH

Use a wall to balance yourself for this exercise

  1. Take hold of one of your ankles and pull it toward your buttocks. Keep the other leg straight
  2. Hold this pose for 30 seconds
  3. Switch legs and repeat

ㅤㅤ

#3 - HIP STRETCH

Use a chair against a wall for support with this exercise

  1. Stand facing the chair
  2. Raise one leg and place it flat on the chair with your knee bent
  3. Gently press your pelvis forward until you feel a stretch at the top of your opposite thigh
  4. Hold for 30 seconds
  5. Switch legs and repeat

These stretches might help if you're suffering mild symptoms, but as always if you suspect you have RLS or need help with symptoms, your GP will be able to give you the best advice.
